William Endley was sentenced to death in South Sudan last February for espionage and conspiring to overthrow the government of President Salva Kiir.

Endley was a military adviser to rebel leader Riek Machar who will once again become Kiir’s vice president in terms of the peace agreement celebrated in South Sudan yesterday.

Expressing her gratitude for the release, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu urges all South Africa working abroad to respect the laws of their host countries.

]]> A retired South African army officer who worked as a security advisor to former South Sudanese Deputy President Riek Machar has been sentenced to death by hanging in juba.

William John Endley sentence today followed the death sentence passed last Monday on Sudanese rebel spokesman James Gatdet Dak.

William Endley was arrested in August 2016 following the collapse of the peace deal between President Salva Kiir and the Deputy President turned rebel leader Riek Machar.

He appeared in court last week.

His photo was tweeted by a privately-owned South Sudanese radio station today.

Endley’s defence  was that he was arrested while performing his duties as a  security contractor to help Machar’s forces integrate into the South Sudanese army.
