Burundi’s blaming  its neighbour, Rwanda for the  foiled assassination attempt on President Nkurunziza’s spokesperson.

Burundi’s police spokesman Pierre Nkurukiye says instructions for the attempt on Willy Nyamitwe’s life were passed from the Rwandan capital Kigali to someone in the Burundi military.

High-profile Willy Nyamitwe was wounded but escaped the assassination bid outside his Bujumbura home on Monday night.

Burundi  police say they’ve known about the plot for some time.

They’ve already arrested a colonel and two corporals.

Bujumbura has repeatedly accused Kigali of being behind the country’s current political strife. Nyamitwe made a presentation two months ago alleging Rwanda was largely responsible for the chaos and instability in Burundi.

His presentation says the course of events and their culmination which is the failed coup of 13 May 2015 sufficiently prove that the acts of destabilization of Burundi were prepared and conducted by Rwanda.

Under domestic and international pressure Burundi’s postponed tomorrow’s parliamentary election and the presidential poll due later this month.

No new dates have been set for the exercise upended by weeks of political turmoil and an abortive coup triggered by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s determination to go for an unconstitutional third term.

Last weekend East African leaders joined the African Union and Burundi’s donor partners in calling for a delay in elections.

It’s been left to the country’s electoral commission to name the new date for parliamentary and presidential polls.

Presidential spokesman Willy Nyamitwe says the new dates will take into account the recommendations of regional leaders and the requirements of the constitution.

President Pierre Nkurunziza’s acknowledgement that it’s impossible to hold free and fair elections amid the unrest, is unlikely to stop the protests against his seeking another mandate.

Hours after a major general announced the ouster of the Burundi President, Pierre Nkurunziza’s spokesman insists the executive is still in full control of the country.

Outside military tanks and armoured vehicles are on the streets with thousands celebrating that they say is the fall of the government.

Burundian presidential spokesman Willy Nyamitwe says President Pierre Nkurunziza is in fall control of the country even though he’s abroad attending a regional summit in Tanzania.

Nyamitwe says he’s aware of the announcement by Major General Godefroid Niyombare that the president’s been sacked for violating the consitutution by seeking a third term in power.

The spokesman says authorities are looking for the general.

In Dar es Salaam, leaders at the summit are resigned to achieving a result far less than what they were looking for.

The best they can hope for is the earliest return to democracy in Burundi.

East African Community leaders have slammed what they call a coup in Burundi.

The heads of state gathered in Tanzania to discuss the crisis in Burundi are calling for the earliest restoration of democracy in the tiny Great Lakes country.

Confusion reigns in Bujumbura where an army general Godefroid Niyombare says he’s sacked President Pierre Nkurunziza, but the president’s spokesman Willy Nyamitwe insists the coup has failed.

East African leaders are in no doubt there’s been a coup.

They’d planned to discuss Nkurunziza’s determination to seek an unconstitutional third term as president.

Now they’re having to respond to Burundi’s military saying it’s been forced to take control because of Nkurunziza’s unacceptable behaviour.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is at the EAC summit along with senior envoys from the European Union, United States and United Nations.
