]]> Egyptian archaeologists have found 50 mummies in a pharaonic desert tomb south of Cairo.

The burial site of what is thought to be an important family dates back to 350 BC .

The mummies were found in four burial chambers nine meters underground in the Tuna El-Gebel site in Minya.

The bodies include 12 children and were found wrapped in linen and encased in either stone coffins or wooden sarcophogi.

Egyptologists at the Supreme Council of Antiquities have not immediately been able to identify the bodies from the Ptolemaic period more than 2000 years ago because no  names were written in hieroglyphics.

Dignitaries and ambassadors from several countries were invited to the discovery site were 40 of the mummies were displayed.
