The Mo Ibrahim foundation says that faced with the COVID 19 pandemic Africa has a lower risk of importation of the virus than other regions.

But it echoes the World Health Organisation in warning it has the highest vulnerability to coronavirus.

ends intro

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation whose annual price for a retired  African leader and survey of good governance has become the barometer for democracy on the continent calls COVID 19 a threat to all humanity.

It says Africa has been comparatively lightly affected so far because of climatic conditions unfavorable to the virus and the  lower average age of its population.

But it will need a positive and bold multilalteral response to coronavirus to compensate  for its poor health services.

Sub Saharan Africa has 2,1 physicians per 10 000 people. That’s twelve times lower than the European number.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who led Liberia through the EBOLA virus that killed 5 000 of her compatriots, says the COVID 19 pandemic calls for another show of international solidarity.

Africa’s first elected woman president, who stepped down four years ago, recognizes the errors in the initial response to coronavirus because they replicate the mistakes made when EBOLA hit West Africa in 2014 and killed more than 11 000 people.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says her 12 years at the helm in Liberia – and particularly dealing with EBOLA – taught her that the crisis can only be saved with courage and concerted action.

The United Nations World Health Organisation, the United States government and her counterparts the Guinea and Sierra Leone defeated EBOLA together.

She’s confident that with solidarity, COVID 19 will also be beaten
