The treatment protocol cautiously adopted by Algerian health authorities is highly conditional. They say it has  reduced fever and inflammation in some COVID 19 cases.

Chloroquine is one of he oldest and best known anti-malarial drugs. However the malaria virus has been immune to it for decades.

The World Health Organisation says there’s no definitive evidence of chloroquine being effective against coronavirus. 

There is only anecdotal evidence by  some Algerian doctors.

That’s twice as many fatalities from this easily treatable virus as those from the far more deadly EBOLA outbreak in the Central African Country.

The World Health Organization is calling the DRC outbreak the largest and fastest moving measles epidemic on the planet.

There have been 310 000 cases reported this past year in every one of the DRC’s 26 provinces.

In 2019, 18 million children under five years old were vaccinated against measles in the DRC.

However poor infrastructure, attacks on health centers and poor access to routine health care is making impossible to keep pace with the spread of the virus.

The WHO says a quarter of the cases in this epidemic are children over five years old who are the most vulnerable.

In the settlement of Apetina Sana, near the city of Beni, fighters of the Uganda-based Allied Democratic Forces hacked civilians – including a  number of children – to death with machetes.

The attacks took place in what has become known as the triangle of death in which more than 200 people have been slaughtered since October.

Regional players are putting increasing pressure on Uganda to stop allowing the rebels to shelter there after incursions.

The attacks are making it nearly impossible to conduct vaccinations against and treatment  for the EBOLA  outbreak in the Beni region.

The World Health Organization fears it might be slipping out of control.

43 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed by Islamist rebels in Beni at the weekend where eight new EBOLA infections were recorded.

A month ago the World Health Organization was forced to pull medical personnel out of the Beni region where they having success fighting the 14-month-old EBOLA outbreak.

Since tracing the disease and vaccinating against it has become nearly impossible, there has been an uptick in EBOLA infections.

The violence is the work the of Uganda-based Allied Democratic Forces who have killed nearly 200 people in Eastern DRC since the beginning of last month.

Heavily reliant on tourism, Tanzania is reluctant to be associated with the EBOLA outbreak in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo that has sickened  more than 3000 people and killed more than 2000.

The World Health Organization has sought confirmation from Tanzanian authorities about three cases in that country – one of them in the capital Dar Es Salaam.

The EBOLA outbreak in the Congo has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

At least four people have died from EBOLA  in Uganda, having carried the deadly hemorrhagic disease  across the border.

The vaccine, which has proved effective in more than forty percent of children between 17 months and five years, is already available in Ghana and Malawi.

The RTS,S vaccine, which trains the immune system to destroy the malaria parasite, requires four doses.

It has been 30 years in the making. 

It will be available every year to more than 300 000 children under the age of two in the three countries.

Malaria kills more than 400 000 children a year – more than half of them are in sub Sahara Africa.

The World Health Organization says the vaccine should not stop people using bed nets and insecticides.

In neighbouring Uganda a nine year-old girl taken across the eastern border in search of treatment has joined this killed by the deadly hemorrhagic disease  who now exceed 2000.

The UN’s health arm, which has already declared the DRC EBOLA outbreak a public health emergency of international concern says authorities are battling to contain its spread.

They are faced with hostility by the local population and violence from rebels active in the EBOLA-affected region.

The nine-year-old girl died in Uganda this morning while waiting for specialists from the Congo to take her back home where she would have had better treatment.

These have shown themselves to be 90% effective and heath authorities are hoping they will contain and cure the second worst outbreak of the deadly hemorrhagic disease on the planet.

The success of the drugs is the best news for those fighting EBOLA.

They produce antibodies that cling to the EBOLA virus and destroy it.

The World Health Organization is holding back on celebrations, however.

Medical staff fighting EBOLA in the east of the CONGO have yet to break down the suspicion and outright hostility of the local population.

They are hoping that delivering a proven cure will do the trick

Two drugs have shown the deadly hemorrhagic disease is curable.

Four drugs have undergone clinical trials in the DRC where more than 1800 people have died in the latest EBOLA outbreak.

Trials on two of them REGN-EB3 and mAB114 have been stopped and doctors are prioritising their use, after they were shown to be 90 percent effective on hundreds of patients.

World Health Organization specialists explain that the drugs attach anti-bodies to the outside of the EBOLA virus, destroying it.

The successful trial moves EBOLA into the category of preventable and treatable diseases.
