Gambia’s new president Adama Barrow, is set to finally return to his west African nation after a week of uncertainty during which his autocratic predecessor desperately sought to cling to power and regional forces entered the country.

Barrow’s aides say he’ll would arrive in Banjul today from neighbouring Senegal, where he was sworn in at an impromptu ceremony at the Gambian embassy a week ago.

Gambia’s new president Adama Barrow, a property developer who lacks political experience, has to allay fears that his administration has got off to a shaky start amid concerns that his delayed return was causing a power vacuum.

There has been criticism over his vice-presidential nominee, and he has yet to appoint a cabinet.

Barrow’s nomination of Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang as his deputy prompted criticism.

She  is allegedly two years over the constitutional age limit of 65.

Officials in Gambia new government say President Adama Barrow will go home from neighboring Senegal tomorrow.

This means he arrive back in Gambia week after being inaugurated at his country’s embassy in Senegal, where he had been sheltering for his safety.

Adama Barrow will have to hit the ground running as Gambia’s new president.

He has a raft of reforms to pass after 22 years of cruel and repressive government by Yayha Jammeh who flew into exile at the weekend.

Barrow has to find how Jammeh managed to loot $11 million from the state coffers before leaving the country.

Most importantly he has to attract tourists back to his country’s sunny beaches.

They left last week when regional military action to remove Jammeh appeared likely.

Their summit  determined to  take all necessary actions to uphold the result of a Dec. 1 election in Gambia, President Yahya Jammeh lost.

The ECOWAS summit in Abuja says the regional grouping will guarantee the safety of president-elect Adama Barrow.

His surprise victory and Jammeh’s initial decision to step down was seen across Africa as a moment of hope.

Jammeh was widely condemned for announcing  a week later  that he would reverse that position and called for a fresh vote.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s been appointed to mediate a regional effort to ensure the will of the Gambian people is upheld.

Ghana re-established its reputation as one of Africa’s cleanest democracies when authorities proclaimed opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo, 72, a British-educated lawyer and veteran statesman, as the next president.

ends  intro

The victory by Nana Akufo-Addo’s centre New Patriotic party, after eight years of rule by the left-leaning National Democratic Congress, triggered wild celebrations across much of the country.

Akufo Addo thanked the incumbent  John Dramani Mahama for conceding defeat and for his  work for Ghana

His win follows the surprise electoral defeat last week of Gambia’s Yahya Jammeh, who had spent 23 years in office after seizing power in a coup.

The two results point to west Africa’s improving record for smooth democratic transitions after recent transfers of power in Nigeria, Cape Verde and Benin. However, Jammeh has  backtracked on his concession.

Gambian opposition leader Ousainou Darboe has been released from prison, having been jailed since April by outgoing president Yayha Jammeh for mounting a protests.

18 of his colleagues were released with him.

Officially Ousainou Darboe is on bail pending the appeal against his three-year prison term for mounting a peaceful protest. So he might still have to appear in court.

It’s considered unlikely the case will be pursued as the Gambia undergoes a political sea change.

Yayha Jammeh used his presidential powers to keep opponents  behind bars.

President Elect Adama Barrow is unlikely to follow suit. Darboe is one of the political mentors of the property developer who scored a surprise victory in last week’s presidential poll.
