The Tunisian navy’s rescued 86 Africans at sea off the town of Zarzis. They were aboard a makeshift boat bound for the Italian island of Lampedusa.

It’s the world’s deadliest waterway, killing with 3 500 of the 218 000 people attempting the crossing.

The would-be migrants were fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Libya.

They’d come from Zuwarah about 60 kilometres up the coast from Tunisia.

They sent out a distress signal when their vessel started taking water on yesterday afternoon.

It was picked up by the Tunisian military, triggering the rescue effort in which all aboard were saved.

It came as the Italian coastguard says at least 10 people died and scores were rescued yesterday when a boat transporting migrants capsized off Sicily.
