Public health emergencies were declared for the H1 N1 swine flu outbreak in 2009,  the polio that re-emerged with the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the Zika fever outbreak in 2016.

The UN’s health arm fears the large international communities living in Angola are carrying the mosquito-born virus into neighboring countries.

Cases of yellow fever  were first reported in Angola’s capital Luanda in December.

The disease has now spread to 16 of the country’s 18 provinces, killing 238 people and infecting thousands.

Travelers from Angola have already exported the virus to China, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where at least 21 people have died.

Countries where there are Aedes mosquitos, carriers of the yellow fever virus, are particularly at risk. Areas where there have been previous outbreaks of Dengue, Chikungunya or Zika virus would also be fertile grounds for the disease to spread.

The decision by WHO’s Ebola emergency committee comes following flare-ups that emerged in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone after authorities declared virus transmission over.

The announcement ends the international emergency declaration and the WHO urges that any restrictions put on the affected countries be lifted.

Vice chairman of the WHO Ebola emergency committee Robert Steffen says the organization’s current battle against Zika in no way dictated its decision to declare the Ebola emergency over.

He says flare-ups of new Ebola cases are not linked to the original chains of transmission dating back to December 2013.
