Ivory coast ex president to face ICC charges

Former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo will face charges at the International Criminal Court of crimes against humanity committed when he refused to accept defeat in a 2010 election.

One of the three judges dissented from the pre-trial chamber confirming the four charges against Gbagbo saying there was not realistic chance of a conviction.

The charges against Laurent Gbagbo include murder, rape and persecution.

These relate to post-election violence in 2010 and 2011 that claimed more than 3 000 lives.

Gbagbo is the first former head of state brought before the ICC.

The 69 year old is accused of masterminding a campaign of violence during the vote standoff.

Gbagbo says former colonial ruler France led the plot that evicted him in favour of his rival, current President Alassane Ouattara.
