Former ANC president says the party could lose the next election

Former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe says the African National Congress could lose the election in 2019.

Interviewed on the BBC’s Hardtalk programme, Mothlanthe says the party might have outlived its useful purpose in South Africa.

Kgalema Mothlanthe says association with corruption could cost the ANC the next election.

“The way things are going , the ANC could lose the next election,” he says

He tells the BBC Hardtalk programme the ANC has to lose for the penny to drop.

This would be good for the party

“The people who there for the largesse would quit, leaving the party to salvage what it can afterwards,” says Motlanthe.

He says political parties are established for specific purpose.

Maybe the ANC has achieved that.
