President Cyril Ramaphosa kicks off an investment summit in Johannesburg today (Friday) aimed at attracting $100-billion dollars of foreign and domestic investment for South Africa over the next five years.
Having spoken to more than 1 000 invited business leaders he’ll get to repeat his message at the G20 investment summit in Germany next week.
The three-day meeting in the commercial capital follows on a jobs summit hosted by Ramaphosa and a medium-term Budget delivered by his new Finance Minister Tito Mboweni.
Each of these events was headlined by Ramaphosa’s promise to contain government expenditure to strengthen the fiscal framework and to priorities sustainable growth with a view to reducing South Africa’s record unemployment.
Today, the captains of business and NGOs will be looking for something new from the South African president.
He has set the theme as “Accelerating Growth by Building Partnerships” and plans to show South Africa has compelling investment opportunities. Ramaphosa’s told reporters the summit is a critical intervention to showcase opportunities for both domestic and foreign investors.
The president is clearly delighted at having received the invitation from Angela Merkel to attend next week’s G20 investment summit in Berlin where he will be able to follow up on opportunities that present themselves in Johannesburg this weekend.
