]]> Former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo will face charges at the International Criminal Court of crimes against humanity committed when he refused to accept defeat in a 2010 election.

One of the three judges dissented from the pre-trial chamber confirming the four charges against Gbagbo saying there was not realistic chance of a conviction.

The charges against Laurent Gbagbo include murder, rape and persecution.

These relate to post-election violence in 2010 and 2011 that claimed more than 3 000 lives.

Gbagbo is the first former head of state brought before the ICC.

The 69 year old is accused of masterminding a campaign of violence during the vote standoff.

Gbagbo says former colonial ruler France led the plot that evicted him in favour of his rival, current President Alassane Ouattara.
