Protestors who forced former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign last April have dismissed the poll as a sham.

Earlier today, it was announced that Abedlmajid Tebboune had won 38 percent of the vote, necessitating a run off.

The final result gives him 20 percent more of the poll which was the lowest in Algeria’s history.

This fuels the charges of a stitch up by protestors, calling themselves the Hirak, who  say the election is a pretext for the corrupt old establishment and military brass, who’ve held power since Algeria’s independence from France in 1962, to stay at the helm.

There’s a fear that this postponement will lead to a lower turnout of the 84-million registered voters in Africa’s most populous country.

Incumbent Muhammadu Buhari and former vice president Atiku Abubaker are the two main candidates to today’s presidential poll .

Buhari’s criticized for failing to adequately to deal with corruption, unemployment and insecurity.

Abubaker has a chequered record on corruption.

It is important the result is accepted by the losing side to avoid the ethnic violence that will inevitably follow a disputed outcome.

Political violence has sprung up as supporters of opposition candidate Raila Odinga, who’s withdrawn from the race, protest against the prospect of Uhuru Kenyatta scoring a runaway victory.

Raila Odinga has not completed the paperwork following his decision to bow out of the re-run election on October 26.

So there’s room for second thoughts.

Police used teargas against his supporters protesting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s refusal to make concessions that Odinga believes are necessary for free and fair election after the August poll result was annulled by Kenya’s Supreme Court.

OT- Morpho warns it won’t be able to supply the same equipment what was used in the August 8 poll that’s been  overturned by Kenya’s Supreme Court.

The company’s installing new equipment for Kenya’s re-run election because the computer system and its data, used last month, it being left untouched to enable a possible external audit.

OT-Morpho says it told the Independent Electoral Commission that this very significant amount of work, cannot be secured by October 17.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga alleges that the August vote was rigged and the electronic vote-tallying system was hacked.

OT-Morpho insists that an internal audit of its system shows no intrusion or manipulation of data.

He’s issued a list of demands he says must be met if he’s to participate.

It was Raila Odinga’s petition to the Supreme Court that led it to overturning the results of last month’s election in Kenya.

Now the three-time loser is playing that for all its worth.

He’s demanding legal and constitutional guarantees before participating in the October 17 poll.

These include the removal of the head and some officials of the independent electoral commission.

He wants criminal investigations opened against them.

He says there’s not way that commission, which got it wrong the first time, can hold a fair election this time around

That body has its work cut out ensuring a free and fair election after the Supreme Court overturned the result of last month’s  poll.

Only President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga will be on the ballot paper in October.

Kenyatta won 54 percent of the vote last time round. He disagrees with but accepts the Supreme Court ruling that election was not run accordance with the constitution.

Odinga’s asking that the electoral commission be removed because of the irregularities and illegalities that occurred previously.
